About the Global Greenmap System Greenmaps are essential tools for those seeking out the greener side of city life in the early 21st century. They highlight and celebrate the unique social, cultural and ecological diversity of our cities and also have great potential in promoting future change along more ecological lines. If you are looking for a farmers' market, renewable energy site, recycling point, or just to chill in one of the city's green spaces and watch the sun set, Greenmaps will assist in balancing your lifestyle within the modern urban context. They are a world-wide phenomenon; currently over 150 places have published printed Greenmaps, with many more on the web and almost 200 projects are in progress in 37 countries. The Greenmap System which links all these maps together is based on an adaptable framework. This framework assists local mapmakers to define, design, produce and distribute their own community's Greenmap of environmentally significant places. In this way, Green Maps identify, promote and showcase a city's green sites, services and resources to visitors, business and local residents visit: www.greenmap.org Sheffield Greenmap Project Would you like to be involved in creating a Greenmap of Sheffield, or know of sites that should be on it? Here in Sheffield we have initiated the process that will eventually lead to a number of city wide and local Greenmaps for the city. To enable us to do this effectively we have formed a constituted group and hold regular meetings. To pay for the research and production of the maps we have successfully applied for local and national grants. Currently Heeley has a Greenmap as does the area surrounding Sheffield University's main Western Bank Campus and there is also a city wide Food Map. If you would like to become involved in some way then please get in touch. |
